Agro-processing

Agro-processing is the subset of manufacturing that transforms raw agricultural, forestry, and fishery products into value-added goods. This involves a wide range of activities like food processing (e.g., making bread from grain, juices from fruit), and the production of non-food items such as biofuels, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. Agro-processing extends a product’s shelf life, reduces spoilage, improves nutrition, and is a significant driver of economic growth by creating jobs and increasing income.

Agro-processing in Ethiopia is a key sector for economic growth, focused on adding value to the country’s abundant agricultural products like coffee, sesame, and livestock. The government is actively promoting this sector through policies and investment in integrated agro-industrial parks (IAIPs) to increase exports, create jobs, and boost foreign currency earnings. The sector has significant potential in areas like edible oil production, food and beverage manufacturing, and livestock processing.  Ethiopia’s agro-processing sector is a government priority, focused on transforming raw agricultural products like coffee, sesame, livestock, and cereals into higher-value goods for both domestic and export markets. Key strategies include the development of Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks (IAIPs) to attract investment, modernize production, and increase exports and foreign currency earnings. The government is also supporting the sector by promoting private investment and providing incentives, such as duty-free import of agricultural equipment.
